Rheumatology is the care of arthritis and other rheumatic disorders of the joints, muscles and ligaments. The term originates from the Greek word ''rheuma'' that means "that which flows as a river or stream," and ''-ology'' that denotes "the study of."
Rheumatology is an interesting and rapidly evolving medical specialty. It’s been found that an early diagnosis and appropriate treatments can significantly improve many rheumatology complaints. For example, treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, gout and osteoporosis can bring these diseases completely under control.
Here at Duchy Hospital we have two rheumatology consultants, Dr Davis and Dr Hutchinson, offering local, easy to access appointments for patients who have suspected rheumatology problems. Our highly experienced rheumatology consultants work together as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care in one hospital setting.
They can often diagnose your rheumatic condition based on your history and a clinical examination. Sometimes diagnostic tests are required. We offer exercise and dietary advice, physiotherapy and podiatry, a wide variety of medications and surgery as required to manage specific rheumatology conditions.
We provide comprehensive rheumatology care including: inflammatory rheumatic disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis), osteoarthritis, crystal arthritis (gout), bone conditions (osteoporosis), connective tissue disorders (scleroderma and systemic lupus erythematosus) and soft tissue rheumatism (tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, housemaids knee and plantar fasciitis).
