Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract), an organ system that transports and digests food, absorbs nutrients and processes waste. The GI tract is composed of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver, small intestine, colon and rectum. There are a number of chronic diseases within the gastroenterology speciality and so many patients require long term monitoring and treatment.

Duchy Hospital offers a wide range of endoscopy services to diagnose and treat gastroenterology problems including: colonoscopy for the large bowel (also known as the colon), gastroscopy for the oesophagus and stomach, flexible sigmoidoscopy for the rectum and lower part of the bowel and, video capsule endoscopy that allows visualisation of the whole GI tract including the small bowel that was previously impossible to see adequately.

We have a multidisciplinary team to treat gastroenterology patients that includes: experienced consultant gastroenterologists, colorectal surgeons and specialist dieticians.

We see common digestive problems such as: dyspepsia (indigestion), diarrhoea and constipation, abdominal pain, acid reflux, peptic ulcers, viral hepatitis, heartburn and irritable bowel disease as well as chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), chronic liver disease and digestive cancers.
